Homemade Apple Pie Spice: The Ultimate Recipe with Real Apples

There’s nothing quite like the warm, comforting aroma of apple pie, especially as the crisp air of fall sets in. But what if you could bottle that essence, capturing the pure, sweet flavor of apples blended with traditional spices, ready to sprinkle into all your favorite dishes? Today, I am thrilled to finally share this incredible Homemade Apple Pie Spice Recipe with you! I initially developed this unique spice blend years ago, and after rediscovering its magic recently, I knew it was time to bring it to you. What truly distinguishes this particular apple pie spice is its star ingredient: real dried apples. Ground into a fine powder and then mixed with complementary spices, it delivers an unparalleled depth of authentic apple flavor that you won’t find in store-bought blends.

The inspiration for this truly special spice mix struck me a few years back when I experimented with a strawberry frosting recipe. That recipe used finely ground freeze-dried strawberries, which infused the frosting with an astonishingly fresh and vibrant strawberry taste. The success of that experiment sparked an idea: why not try the same technique with apples? The results were beyond my expectations! This apple-infused spice blend works wonderfully, not just in apple-centric recipes, but also adds a fantastic dimension to buttercream frosting, much like the ground strawberries did.

Why You’ll Love This Authentic Homemade Apple Pie Spice Blend

This isn’t just another spice blend; it’s an experience. Here’s what makes this Homemade Apple Pie Spice a must-try for every home baker and fall flavor enthusiast:

  • Infused with Real Apples: Unlike traditional apple pie spice mixes that rely solely on spices that complement apples, our recipe uses actual dried apple chips as its primary ingredient. These are blended into a delicate powder, creating a foundation of genuine apple sweetness and tartness before any other spices are even added. This means you’re getting a truly authentic apple flavor profile that elevates any dish it graces. It’s like tasting a bit of crisp, autumn apple in every bite.
  • Incredibly Versatile for All Your Culinary Creations: Prepare to get creative! This unique apple pie spice blend is remarkably adaptable. While it’s absolutely phenomenal in classic baked goods like muffins, pies, and crumbles, its uses extend far beyond. Sprinkle it over your morning oatmeal for a gourmet touch, stir it into hot chocolate for a comforting fall beverage, or mix it into pancake or waffle batter for a delightful breakfast twist. It also shines as a topping for cinnamon sugar toast or even a secret ingredient in savory dishes like roasted pork. The possibilities are truly endless!
  • Effortless and Quick to Prepare: You might think a spice blend this flavorful would be complicated to make, but it’s surprisingly simple. The process is straightforward: just toss your dried apple chips into a high-powered blender and process until they transform into a fine, fragrant powder. Then, transfer this apple base to a bowl and gently fold in the cinnamon, nutmeg, and cloves. In mere minutes, you’ll have a gourmet, homemade apple pie spice that will impress everyone.

Key Ingredients for Your Real Apple Pie Spice Recipe

Crafting this exceptional apple pie spice blend requires just a handful of carefully selected ingredients, each playing a crucial role in creating that signature fall flavor:

  • Baked Apple Chips: This is the hero ingredient that sets our recipe apart. It’s vital to use dried or dehydrated baked apple chips, rather than freeze-dried apples. While freeze-dried apples are fantastic for some applications, their texture and moisture content are different, and they may not blend into the same fine powder. I’ve had great success with Fuji and Red Apple chips from brands like “Bare,” as they offer a naturally sweet apple taste without any strange additives. When selecting your apple chips, always check the ingredient list to ensure they contain only apples and no unnecessary sugars, oils, or preservatives. You can even use homemade dried apple chips if you prefer!
  • Ground Cinnamon: A quintessential partner to apples, cinnamon brings warmth, sweetness, and a touch of woody spice that instantly evokes autumn. While the dried apple powder is delicious on its own, cinnamon elevates the flavor profile, making it undeniably “apple pie.” Feel free to adjust the amount to your personal preference; some like a bolder cinnamon kick.
  • Ground Nutmeg and Cloves: These are the traditional supporting spices that round out the classic apple pie flavor. Nutmeg offers a subtly sweet, earthy, and nutty note, while cloves contribute a strong, aromatic, and slightly pungent warmth. Together, they create a complex, comforting background that truly sings with the apple and cinnamon. You have the flexibility to adjust the quantities of these potent spices to suit your taste. For an even more intricate spice profile, consider adding a pinch of ground ginger or allspice.

Step-by-Step Guide: Crafting the Best Apple Pie Spice Recipe

Making your own real apple pie spice is incredibly simple and rewarding. Follow these easy steps to create your perfect blend:

  1. Prepare Your Apples: Begin by opening your bag of dried apple chips. Carefully transfer all the apple chips into a high-powered blender. While a food processor might work, a powerful blender like a Vitamix or similar model is highly recommended for achieving the ultra-fine, consistent powder needed for this recipe. A regular food processor might leave you with a slightly coarser texture.
  2. Blend to Perfection: Secure the lid on your blender. Start blending on a low speed, then gradually increase the speed to high. This gradual increase helps to prevent the chips from just swirling around without properly breaking down. The blending process should take approximately 30 to 60 seconds until the apple chips are transformed into a very fine, uniform powder. It’s important to keep the blender lid securely on throughout this step, as blending dried apples can produce a significant amount of fine “dust” that can escape. Once blending is complete, turn off the blender and allow the dust to settle for about a minute before removing the lid. This prevents a cloud of apple powder from escaping into your kitchen.
  3. Combine with Spices: Gently pour the freshly blended apple powder into a clean jar or a mixing bowl. Now, add your ground cinnamon, nutmeg, and cloves. Using a small whisk or spoon, mix all the ingredients thoroughly until they are well combined and the spices are evenly distributed throughout the apple powder. Your homemade apple pie spice is now ready to use immediately!
  4. Storage and Clump Management: Due to the natural sugars and slight moisture content in the dried apples, your apple spice mixture may naturally clump together over time, especially if stored for a while. This is perfectly normal! Before each use, simply give the mixture a good stir or gently break apart any clumps with a spoon. The clumps should easily break down, returning to a powdery consistency. To ensure maximum freshness and minimize clumping, always store your apple pie spice in an airtight container in a cool, dry place like your pantry or cupboard. If you find the clumping to be particularly stubborn, you can always return the mixture to the blender for a few quick pulses to restore its fine texture. This spice blend will generally stay fresh and fragrant for approximately six weeks when stored correctly.

Ways to Enjoy Your Homemade Apple Pie Spice

The versatility of this real apple pie spice blend is one of its greatest assets. Beyond its namesake, here are some delightful ways to incorporate this autumnal flavor into your everyday cooking and baking:

  • Elevate Your Breakfast: Sprinkle a generous spoonful over your morning oatmeal, yogurt, or granola. Stir it into pancake or waffle batter for a cozy twist. It’s also fantastic dusted over French toast or a warm bowl of cream of wheat.
  • Baking Bliss: Integrate it into your favorite muffin, quick bread, cake, or cookie recipes. If a recipe calls for traditional apple pie spice, simply substitute it with your homemade blend for an enhanced apple flavor. It’s perfect for apple crisp toppings, pie fillings, and even sweet potato casseroles.
  • Comforting Beverages: Stir a dash into your hot chocolate for a unique, warm flavor combination. It also works beautifully in lattes, warm apple cider, or even fall-inspired smoothies.
  • Sweet Snacks: Use it as a topping for buttered toast, especially when combined with a sprinkle of cinnamon sugar. Mix it into cream cheese for an apple-spiced bagel spread, or add it to whipped cream for a special dessert topping.
  • Savory Adventures: Don’t limit it to sweets! A small amount can add a wonderful warmth to rubs for pork, chicken, or even roasted vegetables like butternut squash. Its subtle sweetness complements many savory dishes surprisingly well.

Apple-Cinnamon Spice Recipe Frequently Asked Questions

Here are some common questions about this unique apple pie spice blend:

  • Is this recipe suitable for specific diets? Yes, this homemade apple pie spice recipe is both vegan and gluten-free, making it a wonderful addition for many dietary preferences.
  • What kind of apples should I use for the best results? I highly recommend using the baked apple chips pictured and mentioned in the ingredients section (such as Bare brand Fuji and Red Apple chips). They offer an excellent flavor and blend into a fine powder beautifully. Generally, any brand of dried or dehydrated apple chips should work, but prioritize those with only “apples” listed as an ingredient to avoid unwanted flavors or additives. If you dehydrate your own apples at home, those will work perfectly too!
  • What does this apple pie spice truly taste like? It tastes profoundly of real, sweet apples! The blended apple chips provide a strong, natural apple flavor that stands on its own. When combined with cinnamon, nutmeg, and cloves, it creates that quintessential warm, cozy, and slightly spicy “fall flavor” profile that is reminiscent of a perfectly baked apple pie.
  • Beyond baking, how else can I use this apple spice? The possibilities are vast! As mentioned earlier, I’ve enjoyed it in hot chocolate, stirred into oatmeal, mixed into muffin batter, and sprinkled over cinnamon sugar toast. For those with picky eaters, like my own kids who aren’t fond of actual apple pieces in baked goods, a couple of tablespoons of this spice mixture, combined with applesauce, can infuse their treats with amazing apple flavor without the chunks. Experiment and find your favorite uses!
  • How long will this homemade spice mixture last, and how should it be stored? This apple pie spice tends to clump together naturally due to the properties of the dried apples. However, if stored in an airtight container in a cool, dark cupboard, it should remain fresh and potent for about 6 weeks. If it clumps, simply use a spoon to break apart the clumps, or for a quicker fix, return it to the blender for a few quick pulses to restore its fine, powdery texture.

Description

This easy Homemade Apple Pie Spice Recipe is made using real apples and has such great fall flavor! Use it in baked goods, on toast, in oatmeal, hot chocolate, and so much more! All you need is a bag of dried apple chips, cinnamon, nutmeg, and cloves.

Ingredients

  • 1 (3.4 oz) bag baked apple chips (or similar sized)
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cloves

Instructions

  1. Open your bag of dried apples and add them all to a high-powered blender. You can probably use a food processor for this recipe, but it may not grind the apples up into a fine powder quite like a Vitamix blender, or something similar, would do.
  2. Turn the blender on low and slowly turn up to high speed. It should take about 30 seconds or so to completely blend the apples into a fine powder. You will want to use a top on the blender because there will be a lot of small pieces, kind of like dust, that will be produced by blending the dried apples. Once the blender is turned off, let everything settle for a minute or so before removing the lid.
  3. Next, pour the apple spice mixture into a jar or bowl. Add in the cinnamon, nutmeg, and cloves and mix well until everything is combined. You can use this apple pie spice immediately or store in an airtight container for about 6 weeks.
  4. The apple mixture will clump together, naturally, so you will probably need to give it a good mix before using, if you’ve been storing it for a little while. The clumps should easily break apart and form a powdery spice blend again after mixing together. Just make sure you store it in an airtight container. If you’re really having issues with the clumping, add it back to the blender and blend it for a few seconds.

Notes

You can add as much cinnamon, nutmeg, and cloves to this spice mixture as you like! Or, you can omit the spices and just use the blended dried apple mixture as is.
