Once you try this easy teriyaki tofu, you’ll understand why it’s a staple in many kitchens. It combines simplicity with spectacular taste, making it perfect for weeknight dinners or a satisfying meal prep option.
- Bursting with Authentic Teriyaki Flavor – The heart of this recipe lies in its homemade teriyaki sauce. Crafted from just a few pantry staples, each ingredient contributes a powerful punch of flavor. When expertly combined, they create a perfectly balanced sweet and savory profile, rich with umami. This sauce isn’t just good; it’s a revelation, offering a depth of taste far superior to most store-bought alternatives. The fresh ginger and garlic impart a vibrant aroma that truly makes this teriyaki tofu recipe shine.
- Remarkably Easy to Prepare – Many people feel daunted by the idea of making stir-fry sauces from scratch, but this recipe will change your perspective. I once felt the same way, but after realizing how straightforward and quick it is, homemade sauces became a regular occurrence in my kitchen. This specific teriyaki sauce is one I prepare frequently, pairing it with various dishes, and it’s absolutely ideal for coating our crispy tofu triangles, transforming them into a culinary delight with minimal effort.
- Incredibly Versatile for Any Meal – What makes this crispy teriyaki tofu recipe truly exceptional is its adaptability. It can be enjoyed in numerous ways, fitting seamlessly into diverse meal plans. I personally find it most satisfying when served with a bed of steaming rice or a tangle of noodles, accompanied by a vibrant side of cooked or steamed vegetables. However, its uses extend far beyond that; it makes a fantastic high-protein afternoon snack, can be added to fresh wraps for a quick lunch, or tossed into salads for an extra boost of flavor and nutrition. You can even experiment by swapping out the tofu for other proteins like chicken, tempeh, or even your favorite vegetables.

Unlocking the Power of Tofu: A Nutritional Marvel
Tofu, often celebrated in plant-based diets, is much more than a simple meat substitute. It’s a nutritional powerhouse, offering a myriad of health benefits that make it an excellent addition to any diet.
- A Complete Protein Source – Tofu is hailed as a complete protein, meaning it contains all nine essential amino acids that our bodies cannot produce on their own. These amino acids are crucial for building and repairing muscle tissue, supporting enzyme production, and maintaining overall bodily functions. Just half a cup of tofu can provide approximately 10 grams of protein, making it an incredibly efficient and healthy plant-based ingredient to incorporate into your meals, especially for athletes or those following vegetarian and vegan lifestyles.
- Promotes Robust Bone Health – Beyond protein, tofu is rich in vital minerals that contribute significantly to bone health. It contains substantial amounts of calcium and magnesium, both of which are essential for the growth, maintenance, and density of strong bones. Furthermore, tofu is a natural source of isoflavones, plant compounds known for their potential to decrease the risk of osteoporosis, a condition characterized by fragile bones. Regular consumption of tofu can therefore play a proactive role in supporting your skeletal system throughout life.
- Supports Heart Health and More – Studies suggest that consuming tofu can also contribute to better heart health by helping to lower levels of LDL (bad) cholesterol. Its low saturated fat content and absence of cholesterol make it a heart-friendly protein alternative. Additionally, tofu is often fortified with other nutrients like iron and zinc, further boosting its health credentials. Its mild flavor also allows it to absorb the flavors of accompanying sauces and spices, making it a versatile canvas for diverse culinary creations.

Essential Ingredients for Your Easy Teriyaki Tofu Recipe
Crafting this incredible teriyaki tofu requires a few key ingredients, most of which are likely already in your pantry. The quality of these components directly influences the final deliciousness of your dish.
- The Star: Tofu – For this recipe, I highly recommend using super-firm tofu. Its dense texture ensures it crisps up beautifully and quickly in a pan, providing that satisfying bite we all crave. You can often find super-firm tofu pre-pressed and sometimes even with added protein, especially at specialty grocery stores. If super-firm is unavailable, extra-firm or firm tofu will work wonderfully; just be sure to press as much liquid as possible out of it before cooking. This crucial step prevents soggy tofu and helps achieve that desirable golden, crispy exterior. You can use a dedicated tofu press or simply wrap the block in paper towels, place it between two plates, and weigh down the top plate with something heavy for at least 15-30 minutes.
- The Heart: Homemade Teriyaki Sauce – The magic truly happens with our homemade teriyaki sauce. It’s surprisingly easy to make and yields a flavor that far surpasses anything you’d find in a bottle. Here’s what you’ll need:
- Tamari: A fantastic gluten-free alternative to soy sauce, offering a rich, salty, and umami base. Opt for low-sodium if preferred.
- Pure Maple Syrup: This natural sweetener provides the perfect balance to the tamari, adding a subtle sweetness without being overly sugary.
- Toasted Sesame Oil: A little goes a long way with this ingredient, imparting a wonderfully nutty, aromatic depth that is quintessential to teriyaki flavor.
- Fresh Ginger: Finely grated fresh ginger introduces a bright, zesty, and slightly spicy note, elevating the sauce’s complexity.
- Fresh Garlic: Minced or finely grated fresh garlic is essential for a robust and aromatic foundation.
- Water or Vegetable Broth: Used to adjust the sauce’s consistency and volume. Vegetable broth can add an extra layer of savory flavor.
- Cornstarch: A key thickening agent that gives the sauce its glossy, clingy texture, perfectly coating the crispy tofu.
- Mirin (optional): A sweet Japanese rice wine that adds another layer of subtle sweetness and a touch of tang. If you don’t have it, the sauce will still be delicious!
Of course, if you’re short on time, a high-quality bottled teriyaki sauce can be substituted, but for the best flavor, I highly encourage you to try making it from scratch.

Mastering the Method: How To Make Easy Teriyaki Tofu
Follow these simple steps to create perfectly crispy and flavorful teriyaki tofu that will impress even the most discerning palates.
- Prepare the Homemade Teriyaki Sauce: Begin by combining all the teriyaki sauce ingredients – tamari, pure maple syrup, toasted sesame oil, fresh ginger, fresh garlic, water or vegetable broth, and cornstarch – into a jar or bowl. Whisk or shake vigorously until all ingredients are thoroughly combined and the cornstarch has dissolved without any lumps. I find a large mason jar with a lid works perfectly for shaking everything together. Set this flavorful sauce aside until it’s time to use.
- Crisp Up Your Tofu: First, ensure your tofu is pressed and patted very dry. Then, cut the tofu block into uniform triangles, cubes, or any other desired shape. Heat a large non-stick skillet over medium to medium-high heat. Add a neutral-flavored oil (like canola, vegetable, or avocado oil), ensuring there’s enough to lightly coat the bottom of the pan in a thin layer. Once the oil is hot and shimmering, carefully add the tofu pieces in a single layer, making sure not to overcrowd the pan. Cook the tofu for about 4-5 minutes on each side, allowing it to develop a beautiful golden-brown color and a wonderfully crispy exterior. Resist the urge to move the tofu too early; let it develop a crust before flipping. You may need to cook in batches if your skillet isn’t large enough.
- Remove Excess Oil (Optional but Recommended): Once the tofu is golden and crispy, remove it from the skillet. For an even lighter dish, you can briefly place the cooked tofu on a plate lined with paper towels to absorb any excess oil. This step helps prevent the final dish from being overly greasy and allows the sauce to cling better to the tofu. Carefully wipe out any remaining excess oil from the skillet before moving on to the next step.
- Bring It All Together with the Sauce: Pour the prepared teriyaki sauce mixture into the same skillet. Bring the sauce to a gentle simmer over medium heat, stirring frequently. As it heats, the cornstarch will begin to work its magic, causing the sauce to thicken and become glossy. Continue to cook and stir for about 5 minutes, or until the sauce is thick enough to generously coat the back of a spoon. Once thickened, return the crispy tofu pieces to the skillet. Gently toss the tofu, ensuring each piece is thoroughly coated with the rich, shimmering teriyaki sauce. Cook for just another minute or two, allowing the tofu to absorb the flavors and the sauce to adhere perfectly.
- Serve and Garnish: Your easy teriyaki tofu is now ready to be enjoyed! I love to serve this over a bed of fluffy white or brown rice, garnished with a sprinkle of toasted sesame seeds and thinly sliced green onions for a fresh crunch and vibrant color. You can also spoon extra teriyaki sauce over the tofu or over your accompanying steamed vegetables for an added burst of flavor. Don’t forget to pair it with your favorite cooked vegetables like broccoli, bell peppers, or snap peas for a complete and balanced meal. Enjoy every delicious bite!

Frequently Asked Questions About Easy Teriyaki Tofu
Got questions about this delicious recipe? We’ve got answers to help you perfect your teriyaki tofu!
- Is this recipe suitable for a vegan diet? Absolutely! This Easy Teriyaki Tofu recipe is entirely plant-based and vegan-friendly, making it a perfect choice for those following a vegan lifestyle or looking to incorporate more plant-based meals into their diet.
- How can I make this recipe gluten-free? To ensure this recipe is fully gluten-free, simply use gluten-free tamari instead of traditional soy sauce. Tamari offers the same great flavor profile without the gluten. All other ingredients in the homemade sauce are naturally gluten-free.
- Can I use bottled teriyaki sauce instead of making it from scratch? Yes, you certainly can. While our homemade teriyaki sauce offers unparalleled freshness and flavor control, feel free to use your favorite pre-made bottled teriyaki sauce if that’s more convenient for you. Adjust the quantity to your preference, and you might need to simmer it a bit longer to achieve the desired thickness.
- Can this teriyaki tofu recipe be frozen for later? Yes, you can freeze cooked teriyaki tofu. For best results, allow the tofu and sauce to cool completely, then transfer it to an airtight freezer-safe container or a ziplock bag. Press out as much air as possible before sealing. It should last for up to 2-3 months in the freezer. Thaw overnight in the refrigerator and reheat gently on the stovetop or in the microwave. The texture of the tofu might change slightly after freezing, becoming a bit firmer.
- How long do leftovers last in the refrigerator? When stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator, any leftover teriyaki tofu will remain delicious for about 4-5 days. The tofu might firm up slightly as it cools, but it will soften again beautifully when reheated.
- What are the best ways to enjoy this teriyaki tofu recipe? This versatile dish is fantastic served in many ways! My personal favorites include pairing it with a generous portion of rice or noodles and a colorful side of cooked vegetables such as steamed broccoli, sautéed bell peppers, or stir-fried snap peas. It also makes for a satisfying, high-protein snack on its own, or you can add it to wraps and salads for a flavorful lunch.
- Can I substitute the tofu with another protein? Definitely! The homemade teriyaki sauce is incredibly versatile. You can easily replace the tofu with almost any other protein you prefer, such as chicken breast or thighs (cut into bite-sized pieces), tempeh, or even firm vegetables like large mushrooms or cauliflower florets. Adjust cooking times accordingly for your chosen protein.
- Do I really need to press the tofu? For the crispiest results, pressing the tofu is highly recommended. It removes excess water, allowing the tofu to absorb flavors better and achieve that perfect golden-brown, crispy texture when pan-fried. While you can skip this step, your tofu might be less firm and not crisp up as much.
- How can I make the teriyaki tofu spicier? If you love a little heat, you can easily add a kick to your teriyaki tofu! Incorporate a pinch of red pepper flakes into the sauce mixture, or add a dash of Sriracha or your favorite chili garlic sauce directly to the pan with the teriyaki sauce. Adjust to your desired spice level.
- What vegetables pair well with teriyaki tofu? A wide variety of vegetables complement teriyaki tofu beautifully. Great choices include broccoli, carrots, bell peppers (any color), snow peas, green beans, bok choy, mushrooms, and asparagus. You can steam, stir-fry, or roast them to serve alongside your tofu.

Description
My Easy Teriyaki Tofu Recipe comes together quickly and is packed with flavor. The tofu gets crisped up in a pan and the homemade teriyaki sauce only takes about 5 minutes to throw together. This high protein teriyaki tofu can be enjoyed with rice or noodles and a generous side of cooked vegetables. The sauce is also versatile and can be used with any protein.
Ingredients
- 1 (14 oz) container extra firm tofu, patted dry and pressed for at least 15 minutes (if needed)
- 1 1/2 tablespoons neutral flavored oil
- Thinly sliced green onion, for garnish
- Rice for serving, if desired
Teriyaki Sauce:
- 2/3 cup water
- 2/3 cup tamari (low sodium recommended)
- 1/2 cup pure maple syrup
- 1/2 cup toasted sesame oil
- 1 tablespoon mirin, or sweet soy sauce (optional)
- 1 teaspoon finely grated fresh garlic
- 1 teaspoon finely grated fresh ginger
- 1 heaping tablespoon cornstarch
Instructions
- Add all the teriyaki sauce ingredients to a jar or bowl and mix until well combined. I like to use a large mason jar with a lid that I can shake to make sure it is mixed well. Set sauce aside until ready to use.
- Cut the tofu into triangles, or whatever shape you like. Heat a large skillet over medium heat and add the neutral flavored oil; you want it to be able to cover the bottom of the pan. Once oil is hot, add in the tofu in a single layer. Let tofu cook for about 4-5 minutes on each side, until golden brown and starting to get crispy.
- Remove the tofu from the pan and wipe out any excess oil. I like to let my tofu sit on a plate lined with a paper towel, so I can get some of the excess oil off.
- Pour in the teriyaki sauce mixture. Allow sauce to come to a slow bubble and cook until it has thickened and can coat the back of a spoon, about 5 minutes, stirring frequently. Add the tofu back in and mix until tofu is completely coated with the sauce, cook for just another minute or two.
- I like to serve my teriyaki tofu over rice with a garnish of toasted sesame seeds and thinly sliced green onion. You can also spoon extra teriyaki sauce over the tofu, or over some vegetables. Enjoy!
Notes
The teriyaki sauce recipe makes a big batch, so it is great if you like extra sauce or want to put some on vegetables also.
You can easily halve the teriyaki sauce recipe if you want just enough for the tofu.
